Black Violin is dope; Strathmore, Maryland, 9/25/25

My wife and I saw Black Violin mix classical and hip-hop last week. It was way dope.

Kev Marcus plays violin and Wil Baptiste plays viola and sings, sometimes plucking the strings. They are the core of the group. They play a mix of tunes, starting with the Bach they learned as kids and moving to more accessible songs they wrote recently.

DJ SPS drops samples, cuts and scratches Liston Gregory plays keyboards. Since it's hip-hop, a lot of the show will depend on the drummer. About halfway through the show, Nat Stokes stopped showing off his rock chops and went to straight-ahead hip-hop, which felt more natural. He's as good a drummer as Prince ever had, both Bobby Z from The Revolution and the Egyptian hat guy from the New Power Generation.

If you have never heard them, check their music here: About – Black Violin

The closest thing I have ever heard to Black Violin is the CD "The String Quartet Tribute to The Roots." Here's a song: The Seed 2.0 - The String Quartet Tribute To The Roots

The String Quartet has a cello. I'm sucker for a fat bottom. BV could use that kind of sound.

Amythyst Kiah opened the show. She plays and sings her own folk songs. She has an Appalachian background so I could relate to her sound. She played and sang two songs on guitar and then two music better songs on banjo. She talked about growing up, but I wished she had squeezed in another tune or two.
